clicking my heels in excitement to be in Dublin |
Our hostel, Avalon House, was about an hour
away from the airport. It wasn’t quite as nice as the
hostel in Edinburgh but I did like it better than the one we stayed at in
London. Exhausted from the week, we
immediately retired to our beds after checking in, very much looking forward to
our tour the next morning. Our tour
guide was a cute little red head named Eva.
She took us around the whole city,
showing us the sights and telling us Irish and Viking history throughout. We started at Dublin Castle, but
unfortunately due to Euro-presidency being there no one can go inside until July.
Afterwards we went into Dublin
City Hall where she told us about various important people in Dublin history—O’
Connell, Drummond, etc.
Next stop was Christ Church. She told us about the catacombs inside and
the story of Tom and Jerry whose corpses are actually in the church.
Another interesting fact we
learned here was about the birds in Dublin.
I don’t know if they do this at home, I’ve certainly never seen it…. But
the birds do a sort of dance on the ground to mimic the rain and in order to
draw worms up to the top. We actually
saw a bird doing this and throughout our stop at Christ Church I’m pretty sure
he got 4 or 5 worms! I tried to catch
him in action but he was a little too quick.
Last we went to Temple Bar area, a
very touristy but also local pub part of town that’s always bustling with
people.
At the end of the tour she told us
an old Irish story, which was a nice twist to the normal tours. She also told us a few Irish sayings-- Sloncha! For cheers, it means "good health!" She told us we had to make sure we said Sloncha when we enjoyed our Guinness later.
After our tour we walked around
town for a little while before heading to take a tour of the Guinness
Factory!
It was really interesting to learn
the history behind Arthur Guiness and the creation of it all.
At the end of the tour they allow
you to pour the perfect pint of Guiness.
Now I’ve officially graduated from the Guiness Academy!
At the top of the factory is a
magnificent view of the entire city of Dublin.
It was night time by the time we finished, so my pictures didn’t turn
out as pretty as it looked but it was very cool.
After the factory we headed home
to get ready for dinner at a local Pub that was recommended to us by a few
people-- GoGarty’s. It was a pretty fun
atmosphere but we got there a little too late to eat downstairs with the live
music because it was so crowded. We all got fun, girly drinks at dinner in celebration of Taylor's 21st!
When we finished, we headed
downstairs and to a few more pubs close by to enjoy the music. It’s amazing how anywhere you go there is
live music playing. It was sooo much
fun-- probably my favorite part about Dublin.
The next day a lot of the group
headed to the Cliffs of Moher but I stayed back to explore Dublin because I
will be going to the Cliffs in late April.
I started my day at the local markets and had a delicious breakfast of a
Blueberry Scone and the best tasting hot chocolate I’ve ever had in my
life.
After the market I met up with
Ashley and we went to see Trinity College.
we took the bus to Kilmainham
Goal, which is a former prison that had been turned into a museum. Unfortunately, when we got there all of the
tours were booked for the day so we didn’t get to go inside. This is where our misfortune started for the
day. After that we got back on the bus
towards St. Michan’s Church to explore the catacombs….it closed an hour before
we got there. So then we decided to walk
around that area and go to the main shopping district and see what we could
find. After about 30 minutes of just
walking around and taking in this different part of town we made our way back
towards St. Patrick’s Cathedral because it was one of the places my parents had
recommended we check out. The gardens
outside were beautiful and I bet inside was even better BUT it was closed for
the day due to a graduation ceremony. womp :(
The only other place on the agenda
was Dublin Castle BUT as I mentioned before, it’s closed until July for
euro-presidency. So we kind of struck
out on the sightseeing Saturday but after our frustrations we just decided to
go back to Gogarty’s and listen to the live music for the rest of the
afternoon—they always have a band from 2:30 pm until 2:30 am, everyday! Honestly, I’m glad things worked out the way
they did because I had a fabulous time just sitting at the pub and listening to
the music.
Ashley and I both got ourselves an
Irish coffee and relaxed for the rest of the afternoon. The music was phenomenal.
We stayed there until late in the evening
when we headed back to the hostel to meet everyone as they got back from the
cliffs. On our way back out with everyone, we ran into a funny
little leprechaun man.
For the rest of the night we just hopped around some pubs and listened to more music.
The next morning we checked out of
our hostel, got breakfast, and walked around some touristy shops to conclude
our trip to Dublin. We had to leave to
catch the plane around 1:00 so we didn’t have too much time on Sunday. I must say we really lucked out with our
weekend in Dublin-- the weather was absolutely beautiful!! Our rainy/snowy week
in London and Edinburgh was all made up for by the sunny, warm weather in
Ireland. I cannot wait to go back in May
with Mom and Dad—especially to see the cliffs because the pictures looked
amazing!
